Boarding Schools

There are many therapeutic boarding schools throughout the United
States that offer help to a runaway child and his or her family.
Most boarding schools accept children from ages seven to eighteen.
Depending on what is causing your child to act out – depression,
peer pressure, ADD/ADHD, drugs, divorce, death of a loved one, or
low self-esteem, there are programs available that will teach him or
her how to cope with these issues. Remember, getting to the root
cause of your child’s behavior is the only way to help him or her.
One of the additional benefits of boarding schools is close
supervision offered by a serious and committed faculty. By
interacting with students on a one-to-one basis and living with
them, faculty members gain valuable knowledge about their students.
Given that classes are small and have excellent resources, students
are assured of receiving a quality education. Adequate measuring
tools for success are one asset that boarding schools employ to
monitor the progress of each student. With these tools, teachers and
counselors can steer students towards endeavors that fit their
personalities and talents. This is especially helpful when a child
is an underachiever who lacks the motivation to learn.
By being away from home and forced to live with one’s peers and
teachers, children in boarding schools learn independence and
self-sufficiency early on in life. They are taught to take
responsibility for their own actions, manage their finances and
excel in athletics. In fact, studies show that parents get along
better with their children after they have spent a few years away
from each other. To promote discipline, boarding schools have
formal, structured classes and lifestyles. By getting accustomed to
certain routines, students develop mental and physical discipline.
Therapeutic boarding schools for troubled teens have a different set
of rules than private or public schools. Children have to give their
consent before they are allowed to move in. They will have to meet
with therapists for individual and group counseling sessions for a
set amount of time each week and also have family therapy sessions
over the phone. There are restrictions as to when a child is allowed
to leave the grounds which are monitored by the staff at all times.
In this environment, a child learns how to follow rules while
gaining their independence.
Once your child moves into a boarding school, his or her days will
be filled with academic classes, community service, therapy, trips,
and life skills. All of these activities teach children how to
manage time, conquer stress, and deal with anger. For many children
and parents, being away from home will be tough at first. Eventually
though, your child will learn how to function on his or her own in a
positive manner and they will begin to appreciate their lives. This
is the ultimate goal of most boarding schools. |
